Fanci-Fall Decor
Illinois homeowners Mike and Cathy Clauson love fall and Halloween for the delightful decorating they get to do indoors and out. Here, Cathy shares four ideas for creating festive scenes that will enchant both adult visitors and trick-or-treaters alike.
1. Hanging Around. Cathy embellishes the light fixture in her family room with pumpkin-scented candles suspended in black, cobweb-shaped votive holders. In the dining room, she ties faux fall flowers and berries onto lamp bases.
2. Hide and Seek. To keep her Halloween decor from being overwhelming, Cathy tucks antique papercraft decorations, ceramic figurines and real mini-pumpkins inside a closeable cabinet. She tops off the whimsical scene by giving her white swan a witchy makeover with a pointed black hat.
3. Versatile Vessels. When the growing season comes to a halt, Cathy uses a metal watering can as a container for feathery wheat stalks. She also puts bushel baskets, crocks and urns into service as holders for mums and sunflowers.
4. Appeal to the Senses. On her kitchen table, Cathy groups several types of fall decor that have a variety of textures and colors. A wood bowl filled with smooth feathers, dry, crisp leaves and bumpy, yellow pumpkins complements the soft, red table runner.
