I have painted a newly built bench, red over black. I love the effect, it's very primitive looking. However, it still "feels" new. Anyone know if rubbing down with paste wax ... or something else ... would make the finish feel more aged/worn?

Rochelle, I use paste wax alot. And love the way it turns out. I even used it on some my antique
pieces and it made them look so much better. Kay

So where do you get paste wax? Is it what you put on floors or cars? I know, I know, I'm probable asking questions that are obvious to everyone else!!!!!

OM Goodness....that bench is beautiful.
I use Brown shoe polish for the aged look...never used paste wax....might have to give it a whirl....great job on the bench.

You might do a wash/dry brush of raw umber to give it a more yellowed/aged look. If you really want it to look more aged, sand some spots on the seat, back, and arm areas to make it look worn. I sand down to the bare wood and then put a wood stain on that area.

Thanks!
Vivo---thanks for the tip with the stain. I didn't sand it much because I was thinking that the "new" wood underneath would be tacky, never thought of staining those areas (duh!) I might try that!

Thank you!
I txt'd a pic I found online to my do-it-all/electrician/plumber/builder friend from high school who lives a half mile behind our new house...and within three days he dropped it off to me! I just painted it. Since then he's built a narrow table to attach to the back of this bench, because where I have it (as a room divider) it's kind of top heavy. So he just dropped that off, and once I distress it, he's going to attach the two. One side is the bench, the other, which faces the computer/office area, will have a table/shelf to use. If I ever I decide to move the bench against a wall, Voila, I have two pieces of prim furniture to work with. LOL

Rochelle, that is so crazy, I saw one in not the magazine that just came out but the one before that, It is black in the magazine, I liked it so much that I marched out bought the wood and I made in just the weekend, painted it just like yours, I condensed it down to fit at the end of my hall, I added a shelf under the seat. If I can figure out how to scan pictures on here I will. Just this weekend I made a dry sink painted it black then hunter green on top of that then stained it dark walnut, it turned out beautiful. I love the fact that I can see a picture then go out to my garage and make it, got that talent from my dad. I'll see if I can put the pictures on here. Oh one more thing, I like your idea with the table attached to the back, they are very top heavy, would you mind if I used your idea?

I've been scouring the net for a dry sink. Still haven't found what I'm looking for!!! Ugh. Come make me one!! LOL
